Driveway Drainage Services
Down the Drain...
A situation such as this client’s is all too common on older properties. The driveway to the garage sloped directly towards the garage door with nothing to impede the flow of this water. To make matter worse, from the garage door out; the driveway sloped towards the sloping driveway coming in. This created a v-shaped gully where water would collect before flowing into the garage itself. This created damage to the supporting beam structure itself. This water laying there also would freeze in the winter creating safety issues.
Rainwater, aided by gravity, creeps, seeps and runs where it’s not welcome. Most garages aren’t designed to be completely watertight, but if water ponds on the pavement outside a garage door after every storm, it can get old quickly. Depending on the location of the garage in relationship to the driveway, and the scope of the problem, a few simple steps might help.
A solution to this drainage problem was to install a trench drain box the entire length of the door thus catching the water before entering. The water then is diverted to the side to naturally flow away down the property.
This entails the cutting of a narrow trench in the existing pavement from one side of the driveway to the other and then inserting a U-shaped channel into this trench. Concrete or an appropriate asphalt patch is then poured around the perimeter of the channel, which is flush with the driveway. A grate covers the top allowing water to enter the drain and flow through this channel to the sides of the driveway and flow away naturally.
