Fall is for Planting
A Bed for ALL Seasons
Fall is a great time for planting. There are numerous advantages that you don’t have in the spring. Not only is the weather cooler and easier on the plants, but planting in the autumn with rain on the horizon has its advantages too. Plant’s leaves aren’t stressed by scorching sun and with cooler temps there is less demand for water from the roots. Therein lay the key to encouraging good plant growth. Planting during the fall enables the root systems to grow before hot summer returns. Smaller plants will be established before winter sets in, giving them a head start over any planted in the spring.
This is another job right up our alley. I started working with this client in Hackensack about a year ago. This client and I worked very well together, with me gaining insight into what he desired and he intently understanding my suggestions and choices.
We visited two local garden centers and there we found exactly what he had in his vision of how we wanted the front of his residence to look.
Upon cleaning out the existing bed and tilling up the soil we amended this growing medium with organic fertilizers to enhance plant growth. Be very careful with fertilizing in the fall though, just a tad too much can do more harm than good as it can result in high concentrations of soluble salts in the growing medium. “just a heads up so you know what you are doing”.
This small area offset from the front porch was ideal for a focal point; for which we chose the Weeping Norway Spruce . In the front center of the porch we placed a dwarf blue spruce which will only grow in height to about 4 ½ ft. to 5 ft., providing year round color and texture to the bed. To the left of this blue spruce we planted a Hinoki cypress, chamecyparis obtuse, which accents the spruce year round. Finally we added a few boxwood and two roses to make this landscaped bed pop.
Nurseries are also very eager to move remaining materials during this time of the growing season; therefore resulting in savings for clients. And let’s not forget about the trunk load of plants that Home Depot heavily discounted. Cabbage Mums and Bulbs was the icing that completed this job.
I rate him 8 out of 10 only because I did not get my cookies and milk at the end of the job.
